Home Care Packages are part of the Australian Government's initiative to empower seniors with the resources needed to maintain a high quality of life at home.

How Long Does It Take To Receive Home Care Package?

The time it takes to receive a Home Care Package (HCP) in Australia varies based on factors such as the assessed package level, your priority status, and the demand in your area. As of December 2024, for individuals with a medium priority level, the estimated wait times as currently listed by MyAgedCare are:

Package Level

Approximate wait time

Level 1

3-6 Months

Level 2

Level 3

These durations can fluctuate due to factors like geographic location and the overall demand for home care services in your area. It's important to note that the waiting period officially begins from the date on your approval letter.

While awaiting your HCP, you might consider interim support options such as the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), which offers basic care services to assist you during the waiting period.

How Many Hours is a Level 4 Home Care Package?

The exact number of hours of care you can receive with a Level 4 Home Care Package depends on the cost of the services you need and your provider’s rates. Generally, a Level 4 package might provide approximately 25 hours of care per fortnight. However, this can vary based on individual circumstances and service costs.

What Can I Spend My Level 4 Home Care Package On?

You can spend your Level 4 Home Care Package on a range of services designed to help you stay independent and safe at home. This includes personal care, domestic assistance, health support, social support, transport, and home maintenance. The specific services should be agreed upon with your provider and tailored to your individual needs.

What Fees are Associated with a Level 4 Home Care Package?

There are three main types of fees associated with a Level 4 Home Care Package:

  1. Basic Daily Fee: Up to $13.08 per day.

  2. Income-Tested Care Fee: Up to $37.55 Depending on your income, you might need to contribute an additional amount, which is assessed by Services Australia.

  3. Additional Fees: Any extra services or items not covered by your package might incur additional costs.

These fees help cover the cost of the care and services provided through the package.

Am I Eligible for a Level 4 Home Care Package?

To be eligible for a Level 4 Home Care Package, you must:

  • Be an older person who needs coordinated services to help stay at home, typically aged 65 or over (or 50 and over for First Nations people).

  • Undergo an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), which will determine your care needs and the appropriate level of Home Care Package.

Eligibility is based on your care needs rather than your financial situation, although your income will determine whether you need to pay an income-tested care fee. For more details, read our blog on Home Care Package eligibility.

How to Access a Level 4 Home Care Package

Accessing a Home Care Package involves several steps, starting with an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This assessment will determine the level of care required and the appropriate Home Care Package level.

Once approved, individuals are placed on a national waiting list. When a package becomes available, they can choose a provider to deliver their services. For a detailed guide on ACAT assessments, you can read our blog on ACAT Assessment Guide.
